The year is 1868. The Civil War has been over only a scant 3 years. A President, Abraham Lincoln, was assassinated 3 years ago as well. His Vice-President,
serving now as President, Andrew Johnson, has barely survived impeachment!
The country is in a mess without the political leadership to pull it out of the
turmoil that has brought it to its lowest point in its brief history. More than
ever
the values of Masonry are needed to turn things around. The grass roots Fraternity of the Masons is just what the country needs now. -author
On September 22, 1868, Arctic Lodge #394 F. & A.M. was established
by the act of the Grand Lodge of Indiana. Brother Alfred D. Owen
was appointed Worshipful Master of Arctic Lodge #394 by the Most Worshipful Brother, Martin H. Rice, Grand Master of Masons in
Indiana. Over the next 60 or so years the Lodge was moved from
place to place from time to time. But on March 10, 1930, the
purchasing committee of Arctic Lodge reported that the purchase
of the Brown Building had been completed. It is the present site of
the Lodge. The first Masonic meeting was held in the building on
March 24, 1930.
Arctic
Lodge was not the first Masonic order in the town of New Harmony.
A dispensation having been received from the Grand Lodge
of the State of Indiana, Monday, the 7th of November, 1825, an installation
ceremony of the New Harmony Philanthropic Lodge took place in the
Town Hall.
Nearly
a century and a half of history has transpired for Arctic Lodge
since that memorable day in 1868. Generations of Masons have benefitted
from the fellowship they have received from their membership in
Arctic Lodge. The community has profitted much from participation
by the Masons in civic projects over the years. Masons in Arctic
Lodge are still working to make this world a better place in
which to live.
Dates and
names were taken from the centenial booklet "A Brief History
of Arctic Lodge
No. 394 F. & A. M."
